Small Expressions has sold thousands of yards of Artistic Fabric all around the world. Each piece is individually hand-painted - there are no repeats. Most quilters find it hard to resist fabric which catches their eye. However, they become repeat customers because Artistic Fabric is not only beautifully unique, but also colorfast as well as fade resistant - that and the high quality of the fabric itself. We begin with smooth 200-count combed-cotton broadcloth that retains the natural softness even after it has been painted, unlike the feel you get when using most craft store paint. Quilters from the novice to the experienced use Artistic Fabric. When making a garment or a bed quilt, you may appreciate the longer life it has when a high quality fabric is used, but it is the art quilter who has even greater needs. Quilts which are intended to be displayed as artwork on a wall, and thus exposed to more intense lighting conditions, need to be fade resistant. This is not achieved with commercially printed fabric nor with hand-dyed fabric, no matter how wonderful they appear.

Once a quilt begins to fade, it is no longer as the artist intended it to be. Value of the colors may effect the design when they fade. The solution? Hide the quilt so it doesn't continue fading, paint (not dye) your own fabric to begin with, or purchase it. If you make art quilts to sell, or commissioned quilts, you may demand a higher price for a piece that will resist fading. There are products which claim to help protect commercial or hand-dyed fabric from harmful light. Until these sprays have passed the test of Time, and not just a few years, we will not know how well they actually work. We still can't pass up a beautiful piece of commercial fabric, our ever growing stashes prove this. However, for any quilt destined to be displayed as art, or any quilt created with the desire to maintain its color as it ages, there is only one choice - hand-painted fabric.
