A New Direction
David was a traveling quilt artist (teaching and lecturing) from 1993 to 2001. His art quilts have been collected and exhibited worldwide. As a professional artist, he has traveled extensively to teach students from many countries and has self published three books. He was a spokesperson for many of the quilt industry's leading companies.
This web site will soon reflect his new artistic direction.
No longer focusing only on the art quilt as a medium, and no longer quilting by machine (see New Direction), David's studio time now also includes: fabric compositions on canvas, fiber art, art characters, sculpting (mixed media and his own air drying clay), pen and ink with colored pencil, and acrylic paintings (post-impressionism, surrealism and energism).
His quilting time is now focused primarily on contemporary crazy-style art quilts, (commission work) with intensive hand-stitching and beadwork (primarily with precious and semi-precious gems).

Studio Art Quilts
Studio Art Quilts are simply quilts made to be displayed as artwork on a wall. Usually created in a dedicated studio, rarely are they simple. Most of David's art quilts were made with his hand-painted fabric, Artistic Fabric ®. These quilts are colorfast as well as fade resistant. He often uses real gems when embellishing with beadwork.

Polymer Clay Artwork
Polymer clay is a manmade material that remains pliable for long periods, but bakes or "cures" to hardness in an ordinary home oven. It can be sculpted, carved, stamped, textured, sanded, buffed, drilled and painted. Polymer clay is a type of "clay" based on synthetic polymer (polyvinyl chloride). It is not the same as an earth clay which must be fired in a kiln, nor the same as air drying clays, nor the same as modeling clays which won't dry and can't be hardened.

Fiber Artwork
These pages are dedicated to artwork other than quilted art. Such work may include, fabric manipulation, felted wool and silk fibers, decorative threadwork, specialty yarns, hand-made paper, weaving, scrumbling, fiber beads, dyeing, wool whole-cloth, and embroidery. David's fiber artwork focuses on creating harmony with color and texture. The pieces may be free hanging or framed under glass.

Artistic Fabric ®
Artistic Fabric is David's hand-painted art cloth. This is usually a 200-count combed cotton broadcloth, as well as a variety of silks. Setacolor fabric paint leaves the hand of the fabric feeling soft. The fabric is colorfast and resists fading. David is also dying wool and wool blends.
There are no samples or yardage available at this time.

Art Characters
Most people use the term Art Doll, but Art Character removes the thought that these are something to play with. The word "character" also causes one to expect these small sculptures to have a personality. Best described as a unique three-dimensional work of art, of a human being or a fantasy character, conveying a message or representation, often created with, or in combinations of - fabric, polymer clay, paper clay, natural and creative fibers, found objects.

Fabric Compositions
A composition is defined as "... putting together a whole by combining parts." In this case, the parts are fabric. The design is arranged on framed stretched canvas (like a painting) and the whole is sealed under protective coats of an acrylic medium. The artwork is permenently protected from the elements and will not crack nor yellow with age.
